Exploring Wolverhampton: SPRINGFIELD

Springfield is the area that lies between Cannock Road and Wednesfield Road just as you head out of the city centre. It's not exactly my favourite part of town, and has the somewhat grim feel of the urban inner-city combined with industrial decay. Nowhere is this more apparent than at the Springfield Brewery, a once fine landmark that had become a crumbling, burnt-out ruin. Hopefully the proposed revival of the building will aid efforts to regenerate the area as a whole.

Lanesfield is one of my least explored areas of Wolverhampton, although I have come to know the place better thanks to a handful of lunchtime outings. Situated straddling the Birmingham New Road, Lanesfield rather blends in with Spring Vale and Ettingshall Park. Notable features include the Copper Bowl pub, the Hilton Road estate and the local post office.

Exploring Wolverhampton: PENN

Penn is one of the larger districts of Wolverhampton and is a place of intriguing contrasts. I particularly like the old village centre, up by St Bartholomew's Church and the Old Stags Head pub, providing a fascinating glimpse of an old, almost rural Wolverhampton. There's plenty to photograph elsewhere too, with the busy Penn Road being home to a number of shops and pubs, whilst there are housing estates to show the more modern face of suburbia.

Exploring Wolverhampton: EAST PARK

Photos taken of East Park and the surrounding estate - one of my favourite corners of Wolverhampton. I remember visiting the park as a kid, and it holds nice memories for me of eating chips and having a go on the obstacle trail. The estate though was something of a mystery until I explored it in September 2005, but I had fun taking photos of the local shops and the Dan O'Connell pub. All in all there's plenty to investigate and I really quite like the place.

Exploring Wolverhampton: SPRING VALE

Spring Vale is an area of south Wolverhampton, part of the wider Spring Vale Ward that also includes parts of Lanesfield and Woodcross. I've always found Spring Vale itself quite difficult to pin down - there's an industrial estate near Bilston, and the branch library on the Birmingham New Road, so I'm having to use a bit of licence when defining the area.

Saturday 9 December 2006: Spring Vale is an area of south Wolverhampton, part of the wider Spring Vale Ward that also includes parts of Lanesfield and Woodcross. I've always found Spring Vale itself quite difficult to pin down - there's an industrial estate near Bilston, and the branch library on the Birmingham New Road, so I'm having to use a bit of licence when defining the area.

I have a long association with Oxley, with some of my earliest memories centred on Rakegate, visiting the shops at the Three Tuns and going to the library or the club with Nan and Grandad. I have a lot of affection for the area and its always nice to go back for a return visit.

Exploring Wolverhampton: CASTLECROFT

Castlecroft is a local estate on the western fringes of Wolverhampton, just down the road from Finchfield. The area was renowned for the Castlecroft Hotel, but this was demolished a few years back to make way for a housing development. There's still a fair bit to explore though, including the 543 terminus and the local shops on Windmill Crescent - not forgetting the Firs pub, where Rog and I watched England beat Paraguay in the 2006 World Cup!

Wolverhampton by Canal: Wyrley & Essington

The canal is a personal favourite, and I have explored the entire Wolverhampton section from Horseley Fields, through Heath Town and Wednesfield, to Perry Hall where the canal enters Walsall territory.

Exploring Wolverhampton: HEATH TOWN

Heath Town underwent major changes during the 1960s, when much of the earlier village was swept away and replaced with tower blocks. Even so, the old heart of the community remains in the form of the local church, park and public baths, making the area worth investigating despite its notorious reputation.

Exploring Wolverhampton: WOODCROSS

Until recently, Woodcross was one of the few parts of Wolverhampton I had yet to explore - save for passing through on the 581 bus a couple of times. I needed to put this right, so back in December I did a really good walk through the area and down into Coseley. What I discovered was a pleasing sense of community and an area of Wolverhampton with a proper Black Country identity.

Wolverhampton by Rail: WOLVERHAMPTON

Wolverhampton is one of the major West Midlands stations, served by many local and national services. The station is also my local station, a place I have visited many, many times over the course of hundreds of journeys. The problem is, I don't actually like the station - its ugly and boring and has no charm or character whatsoever. Things are changing with the arrival of a new platform, and there are further plans to provide the city with a station to be proud of.

Exploring Wolverhampton: HURST HILL

Hurst Hill is effectively split down the middle - part of the area comes under Wolverhampton, part under Dudley with the boundary running straight down the centre of Hurst Road. The hill itself provides a notable climb on the road between Coseley and Sedgley - something of an experience on the 545 route. I visited the area as part of my Woodcross Walk in December 2005.
